Contemporary Issues in Outer Space Law Virtual Conference

Te Piringa Faculty of Law

University of Waikato – New Zealand

Te Piringa translates as the coming together of peoples and cultures. Our name was gifted to us by the late Te Arikinui, Dame Te Atairangikaahu, the Māori Queen. We first opened our doors in 1991, and we have been gathering together ever since. Our anniversary theme – 30  Years of New Frontiers – acknowledges that Te Piringa, as a Law Faculty, not only broke new ground at its inception but continues to push outward into emerging and vital fields.  From our founding commitment to biculturalism in our legal education, to research expertise in new legal domains, in these areas and more Te Piringa is a Faculty invested in celebrating new frontiers.

The Contemporary Issues in Outer Space Law Virtual Conference further pushes outwards these new frontiers and enables individuals with an interest and expertise in outer space law to connect with one another and exchange ideas. The Virtual Conference will be hosted by Te  Piringa Faculty of Law at the University of Waikato, New Zealand, and will take place on  Friday 3 September 2021. The aim of this virtual conference is to provide an informal forum for academics, Ph.D. students, government lawyers, members of civil society, and other practitioners of international law to discuss and exchange ideas on contemporary issues in space law.

We invite academics, postgraduate students, legal practitioners and staff from government  departments to submit proposals for papers on space law connected but not limited to:

o perceived gaps in the international space law framework and Australian and New  Zealand interests in filling those gaps, including scientific, commercial, national  security, military, broader governmental, public and generational interests;

o analogies from the regulation of other domains (particularly the global commons of  airspace, the high seas, the deep seabed, the polar regions, cyberspace and the  electromagnetic spectrum);

o the current initiatives and methods to develop space law.

Submission of Proposals

If you are interested in presenting at the conference, please submit an abstract (up to 300  words), a biographical note (up to 150 words) to [email protected] by Friday 30 July 2021. Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their proposal by the start of August.  The organisers of this conference will seek to publish selected papers in an edited collection of essays after the conference.
