Call for Papers

We welcome theoretical, empirical, historical and doctrinal analysis that investigate:

  • The positions of African actors (states, economic actors, civil society, and intergovernmental organizations) regarding the legality or functioning of contemporary sanctions
  • Successful and unsuccessful interventions of African states and non-state actors in the development of international law and shaping of political practice relating to sanctions
  • Comparative analysis of African sanctions practices with national and regional practices in other regions of the world
  • Sanctions policy and practice from outside of Africa (global, EU, US) bearing a distinctive impact on the continent
  • The role of sanctions in promoting peace and security in Africa
  • Cross-cutting sanctions issues affecting African states and non-state actors
  • Meta-reflections on the state of Africa-centred sanctions research
  • Unintended consequences of sanctions imposed against African targets

We encourage submissions from or in collaboration with African, Africa-based, and Africa-focused researchers. Submissions from around the world are accepted.
