DR. APJ ABDUL KALAM AIR & SPACE LAW & POLICY ESSAY COMPETITION, 2020

DEVELOPING A GLOBAL KNOWLEDGE BASE THROUGH A LOCAL INITIATIVE

Welcome to the Second edition of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Air and Space Law and Policy Essay Competition 2020. The pandemic (COVID-19) has interrupted all sectors of the economy and transport industry is affected the most due to the confinement restrictions imposed by various governments across the world, understandably, for a good reason as health and safety is a priority for the transport sector. Though the sector has been under tremendous financial pressure due to lack of revenues, it continues to play an important role as it provides `essential services`. Repatriation, food and medical supplies, vaccines distribution or simply the fact that we are able to work from home today, is partly because of the investments made in space technologies over the years through satellite communications, satellite navigation and earth observation that contributed inestimably to support people and governments across the globe in these uncertain times. COVID-19 has highlighted the relevance and the potential of aviation and space sector(s) in connecting people and goods. This means from a legal and policy standpoint, the jurisprudence should evolve as we march forward.

This essay competition provides an opportunity to experienced practitioners and students to explore the challenges and opportunities in the legal and policy areas relating to aviation and space sector(s). These essay`s should present a rigorous examination of issues that are useful for academic purposes and also be relevant to international and regional organizations, civil aviation professionals, international and national space agencies, private operators, investors, insurers, and aviation and space consultancies.
