Contemporary understandings of body image are deeply influenced by media, culture, race, gender, class and sexual identity. This Collection seeks to examine how ideals of beauty and embodiment are constructed, internalised and contested across different populations and social platforms.
We encourage submissions that critically explore the intersections of body image with cultural norms, power structures and digital media, including within underrepresented or marginalised communities.
We welcome papers that engage with topics including (but not limited to):
Beauty standards and body image: feminine, masculine, non-binary perspectives
LGBTQ+ perspectives on embodiment and visual culture
Racialised and class-based body ideals
WEIRD bias in body image research and global misrepresentation
Internalised prejudice and body-related repression
Eating disorders, thinness, fatphobia, body dysmorphia
The psychological and social impact of media and influencer culture
Online forums and algorithm-driven extreme content
Law, regulation and online platforms’ responsibility regarding body-related content
Social media usage among children and young adults, and its link to body dissatisfaction
Cultural and historical variations in body perception
Arts and activism: body positivity and resistance movements
Intersectional feminist and decolonial critiques of beauty norms
