Introduction
Artificial intelligence (AI) technology, such as AI robots, AI chatbots, and AI toys, is increasingly being applied in the field of education to enhance students’ learning outcomes and interest in learning. AI is expected to change education in various ways. It can not only automatically grade assignments and monitor student progress, but can also act as an intelligent personal tutor, providing students with immediate feedback and guidance. This can help students understand their learning strengths and weaknesses more quickly, allowing them to promptly adjust their learning strategies. Additionally, AI can analyze large amounts of data to identify common student difficulties and weaknesses, thereby helping teachers develop more targeted lesson plans. At the same time, AI technology can promote the development of remote education, enabling high-quality educational resources to reach students in more regions or countries, thereby reducing the educational gap between developing and developed countries. In the future, as AI technology continues to mature, education will become more intelligent and personalized, providing every student with a richer and more efficient learning experience.
This special issue of applications of AI technologies in K-16 education seeks to examine how teachers, classrooms and schools have used AI to personalize education, support classroom learning, educators and improve students' learning outcomes.
The rationale behind this special issue is to provide a platform for researchers, educators, policymakers, and practitioners to share their insights, experiences, and research findings on the use of AI technologies in education. By bringing together diverse perspectives and innovative ideas, this special issue aims to advance our understanding of AI’s potential to transform education and drive positive change in teaching and learning practices.
For this special issue, we invite empirical and theoretical studies and systematic review papers that contribute to theory and/or practice regarding a range of topics related to the use of AI technologies in educational contexts.
This special issue has the potential to be a unique and valuable resource for future researchers. It will feature the latest research and developments in the application of AI technologies in education, providing insights into emerging trends and technologies that can shape the future of teaching and learning. It will not only focus on theoretical aspects but also emphasize practical implications and real-world applications of AI technologies in educational settings, offering insights for educators, policymakers, and technology developers. The special issue will also identify and discuss future research directions.
