Resource efficiency and circular strategies in the construction industry

Closes:

Submit your abstract here by 1 February 2026

Introduction

The construction industry currently incorporates 40% of all raw materials extracted every year, in a scenario in which, out of 100 billion tonnes of raw materials, only less than 10% is sourced from waste. To mitigate the depletion of natural resources and the impact of quarrying and mining activities, it is necessary that the construction industry deploys circular strategies aimed at maximising the upcycling of secondary resources. This special issue intends to offer a platform to showcase innovative research into the use of industrial and agricultural side-streams, particularly focusing on CDW and those waste materials that have less commonly been used in cement and concrete.

List of topic areas:

  • Classification and mapping of industrial and agricultural waste
  • Blended and alkali-activated cements incorporating “exotic” waste
  • Pre-treatment of waste materials for enhancement of reactivity
  • Dissolution kinetics and potential release of hazardous elements in solution
  • Incorporation of CDW into cement matrices and as recycled aggregates
  • Treatment of CDW and other waste materials for increased upcycling potential
