Why Civil Engineering?

Civil Engineering is the Member journal of the Institution of Civil Engineers, UK, received by its 97,000 Members worldwide.

What does it cover?

The journal offers a comprehensive insight into the work of the international civil engineering profession and its vital contribution to society. Topics cover the full spectrum of civil engineering activity, ranging from the smallest to the largest projects, and from new technologies and methods to debates on philosophical, ethical, environmental, management and safety issues.

Practical and diverse in its scope, the unique full-colour publication publishes four regular issues and two special issues each year.

How do I write a paper?

You can view our Author Guidlines here. Think about something you or your colleagues have done recently that was particularly interesting, challenging or innovative. Start gathering data, images and references and then try writing an abstract with the following structure:

- Purpose of your paper (50 words)
- How, where and when information was gathered (50 words)
- What new things were learned (50 words)
- Why these things are important (50 words)

When you are happy with it, show it to colleagues – who may wish to write the paper with you – or email it to the Proceedings editor for comment. Next flesh the paper out to 2000–3500 words with around 6-10 good quality photographs and simple drawings, again ask your colleagues to comment, and finally upload it for peer review at https://ice-review.rivervalley.io/journal/jcien.

Writing papers counts towards continuing professional development and, if accepted for publication, will bolster your CV and raise your professional profile worldwide – especially if you are nominated for an award.
