Housing is a fundamental social infrastructure that shapes access to healthcare, education, labour market opportunities, and economic development. Housing conditions and affordability also influence social inclusion and community resilience. However, as housing costs continue to increase, affordable housing has become a challenge in both developed and developing countries.
The challenge of housing affordability is closely related to social, economic, environmental, and demographic changes. Climate change, aging population, and migration are proposing new needs in housing. At the same time, recent innovations in technology, financing mechanisms, and planning approaches provide new possibilities for supporting the development of affordable housing. These challenges and innovations call for solutions from interdisciplinary perspectives and collaborative conversations from local communities, cities, to regions, and nations.
This Collection welcomes research on the challenges, innovations, and solutions related to affordable housing. We also encourage studies examining the relationships between affordable housing and other fields, including education, climate change, economics, sociology, public health, transportation, and urban planning.
We encourage submissions surrounding the following themes (but not limited to):
- Policies and strategies for advancing affordable housing development
- Challenges in housing shortages, land availability, and land use
- Measuring and monitoring housing affordability
- The relationships between affordable housing, educational access, attainment, and outcomes
- Affordable housing as a tool for poverty reduction, social inclusion, and social mobility
- Affordable housing, economic development, and urban development
- Housing affordability and demographic change, including population aging and migration
- Climate-resilient and sustainable affordable housing
- The role of emerging technologies in affordable housing development and management
- Urban planning and design for affordable housing
- Comparative studies of affordable housing strategies across cities, regions, and countries
