This Scientific Reports Collection welcomes original research on Cryogenic and high-temperature thermal systems. Narrative review articles are also welcomed, to our sister journal Scientific Reviews. For further information, please view the ‘Participating Journals’ below.
Cryogenic and high-temperature thermal systems encompass technologies operating at the extremes of the temperature spectrum, where heat transfer, material stability, and fluid behavior are governed by unique thermophysical phenomena. These systems play a critical role in applications ranging from superconducting electronics and space propulsion to fusion reactors, advanced power generation, and high-temperature industrial processing. Understanding heat transport, phase behavior, and thermal management under such extreme conditions is essential for enabling reliable operation, energy efficiency, and material durability. Recent advances have been driven by improved materials capable of withstanding extreme thermal gradients, alongside innovations in cryogenic cooling, thermal insulation, and high-temperature heat exchange.
This Collection brings together original research that explore extreme-condition heat transfer, thermal materials, cooling and insulation technologies, and system-level thermal design. Studies addressing reliability, energy efficiency, and integration into emerging technologies such as fusion energy, space systems, and quantum computing are particularly welcome.
