Call for paper: The anatomy of hate and violence

The anatomy of hate and violence

Hate and violence are complex social and psychological phenomena that continue to shape political discourse, human conflict, and social interactions. We invite scholarship that investigates the origins, mechanisms, expressions, and consequences of hate and violence, particularly from the vantage points of sociology, psychology, social policy and criminal justice.

We aim to examine hate and violence as both individual acts and systemic conditions, with attention to how emotional, cultural, technological and institutional forces sustain or resist them.

We welcome papers that engage with topics including (but not limited to):

  • Theoretical models of hate, including concepts like prejudice, dehumanisation, threat and emotional injury, harm
  • Ingroup versus outgroup dynamics in hate and violence
  • Empathy deficits and their relationship to antisocial behaviour and aggression
  • Social media and online radicalisation
  • Psychological components of violent ideation and behaviour
  • Socioeconomic, cultural and political drivers of hate and extremism
  • Racism, misogyny, incel culture, and marginalisation as breeding grounds for hate
  • Polarisation and democratic breakdowns as contributors to intergroup violence
  • Methodological challenges: how is hate or violence measured and understood?
  • Victim recovery, healing, and resilience
  • Interventions, education and restorative justice models
  • Policy implications and cross-sector responses (e.g. education, law, social work)

We invite empirical research, case studies, policy analysis, and interdisciplinary dialogue.
