Scopus Journal Call for paper: Journal of Workplace Learning (Transforming Workplace Learning and Development Through Artificial Intelligence: Bridging Knowledge Gaps and Enhancing Performance )

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the workplace across industries, influencing how tasks are executed, skills are developed, and how organizations adapt to continuous change (Li & Yeo, 2024). Recent research in HRD highlights the potential impact of AI technologies in workplace learning and development-ranging from AI-based coaching (Grabmann & Schermuly, 2021) to productivity enhancement tools that support workplace learning (Callari & Puppione, 2025). Researchers anticipate a broader integration and reliance on AI-driven applications and systems in workplace learning and development.

Many HRD researchers and professionals agree that AI-augmented learning and development will bring a paradigm shift to organizations, presenting a complex landscape with both opportunities and challenges (Ardichvili, 2022; Korzynski et al., 2024). Yet, the integration of AI in workplace learning and development remains an emerging area with limited empirical knowledge. This knowledge is needed to guide organizations and HRD professionals in understanding the capacity of AI-integrated systems, building optimal strategies for responding to the innovation in workplace learning and development, and effectively implementing changes at scale for sustained growth of organizations (Li & Yeo, 2024). In addition, a pronounced gap exists in the theoretical frameworks needed to underpin both research efforts and practical HRD interventions.

This special issue explores AI’s transformative role in reshaping workplace learning and development. It aims to advance knowledge in HRD scholarship and practice and foster sustainable growth through data-driven insights and AI-augmented solutions. It seeks to bridge technological, organizational, and human perspectives by highlighting the forward-looking nature of AI technologies and illustrating how organizations can innovate and thrive by integrating AI into their HRD interventions and systems. At the same time, this special issue invites contributions that critically explore its promises, challenges, and concerns, as well as the subsequent implications of AI integration in workplace learning and development. Ultimately, our goal is to foster a multidisciplinary dialogue that connects research from human resource development (HRD), organizational learning, educational technology, management, and other relevant fields.

We invite empirical studies and theoretical articles that contribute to the following areas, drawing from various disciplines, theoretical perspectives, methodologies, and critical reflections:

  • Expanding empirical evidence on AI-integrated workplace learning and development initiatives
  • Advancing theoretical frameworks explaining AI adoption, integration, and impact on formal and informal learning processes in the workplace
  • Critically analyzing ethical and social implications of AI use in workplace learning and development
  • Offering empirical evidence and/or theoretical insights to support organizations, HRD professionals, and policy makers in navigating AI-augmented learning and development ecosystems.
