Enhancing disaster resilience in the built environment through sustainable and smart engineering solutions
The increasing frequency and intensity of climate-induced and multi-hazard disasters have highlighted the urgent need for resilient, sustainable, and technologically advanced built environments. Traditional approaches to infrastructure development are no longer sufficient to address complex and interconnected risks driven by climate change, rapid urbanization, and environmental degradation.
This Special Issue focuses on enhancing disaster resilience in the built environment through sustainable and smart engineering solutions. It builds on selected high-quality contributions from the 5th SLIIT International Conference on Engineering and Technology (SICET 2026), themed “Engineering Resilience through Sustainable and Smart Solutions.” The issue aims to integrate interdisciplinary perspectives across engineering, digitalisation, sustainability, and resilience science. The Special Issue emphasises the role of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, data-driven decision systems, smart infrastructure, and advanced materials in strengthening resilience. It also highlights the importance of governance frameworks, financial mechanisms, and stakeholder collaboration in enabling practical and scalable resilience solutions.
Aligned with global frameworks such as the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Paris Agreement, and the Sustainable Development Goals, this Special Issue provides a platform for academics, practitioners, and policymakers to contribute to advancing resilient and sustainable built environments. Contributions addressing challenges in developing and climate-vulnerable contexts are particularly encouraged.
