International Conference on Challenges, Prospects & Emerging Dimensions of Human Rights
ABOUT ST. XAVIER’S UNIVERSITY, KOLKATA
St. Xavier’s University, Kolkata (SXUK) was born out of a vision to create a center of excellence in higher education in West Bengal. In 2011 Rev. Fr. Dr. John Felix Raj, S.J., and the St. Xavier’s College (Calcutta) Alumni Association conceived ‘SXC Vision 2020’ , which paved the way for the establishment of SXUK. The University’s journey gained momentum in 2012 when the Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal,
Dr. Mamata Banerjee, proposed the establishment of a university under the Jesuit banner. The Government of West Bengal generously allocated 17 acres of land for the University campus at Rajarhat. A significant milestone was achieved in December 2016 when the St. Xavier ’s University Kolkata Act 2016 was passed. The Act came into effect on February 8, 2017, marking the beginning of a new era in higher education. Father Felix Raj SJ took office as the first Vice Chancellor on February 15, 2017. The university was formally inaugurated on July 7, 2017, by Dr. Mamata Banerjee, Hon’ble Chief Minister of West Bengal. Today, SXUK stands as a testament to academic excellence in innovation and social responsibility.
