The modern origins of dynamic compaction ground improvement dates back to the late 1960s and the French Engineer – Louis Menard. The technique witnessed significant growth and application during the 1970s and has continued to do so, having been applied internationally on a range of significant ground engineering projects, in a range of ground conditions, including collapsible soils such as coastal sabkha deposits and opencast mining backfill. The subsequent development and application of dynamic replacement (and more recently dynamic surcharging) has extended the range of problematic soils that can be treated.
Technological developments have included specialised rigs with greater weight lift capacities, allowing application of greater impact energy, and GPS-based computerised recording/monitoring of the operation, together with specialised mechanisms for the dropping of the heavy weights.
Paper submissions are invited covering all aspects of conventional drop weight dynamic compaction and dynamic replacement, including state-of-the-art reviews, documented case histories; design; monitoring, quality control and testing aspects.
