Clusters and Industrial Districts: Transition to Environmental Sustainability
Research on clusters and industrial districts (clusters/IDs) transition to sustainability is gaining momentum. Different strands intersect this phenomenon, encompassing the field of economic geography at the cluster and regional level of analysis, along with a micro-level managerial perspective exploring firms in clusters and industrial districts. Understanding sustainability transition in clusters and IDs as a process of new knowledge and practices development in a prone-to-innovation spatially-bounded context is a challenge, as it requires the integration of environmental sustainability processes, activities, practices and actors into the clusters/IDs mainstream framework, analyzing when (under what conditions), why and how sustainability innovation is activated in clusters/IDs and collocated firms.
