Call for Papers: Authoritarian Capture – (Re)shaping Global Governance from within?, Abstract deadline: 10 June 2026
Authoritarian actors – from autocratic regimes to right-wing governments and illiberal NGOs – are increasingly seeking to influence the interpretation of fundamental international norms, the procedures and practices of multilateral decision-making, the composition and conduct of international bureaucracies, and the institutional architecture of regional and global cooperation.
Whether these efforts amount to a transformation of the liberal international order and international institutions remains an open theoretical and empirical question. Our upcoming workshop invites contributions that address different forms of autocratic capture in international institutions, and discuss the consequences for global governance.
Funded by Fritz Thyssen Stiftung, the workshop is co-organised with Daniëlle Flonk (Hitotsubashi University), Clara Böning (Zeppelin University), and colleagues from Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik (SWP) – Daniel Voelsen, Lars Brozus, and Stella Schade – and will take place at the SWP in Berlin from 12-13 November 2026!
