Call for Papers: ECLAN PhD Seminar 2026, Emerging Voices in European Criminal Law, 22 May 2026

The European Criminal Law Academic Network is proud to announce its 13th PhD Seminar on European Criminal Law, to be held at the University of Coimbra Institute for Legal Research on 22 May 2026. The Seminar – preceded by the International Colloquium Directive on Combatting Corruption: Breakthrough or Step Sideways? (21 May 2026) – provides a friendly environment where PhD candidates and post-doc or early career researchers can gain experience in presenting their research, learn from each other and establish communities with scholars in their field. Selected applicants will present their papers to, and obtain feedback from leading scholars in the field of European criminal law, including ECLAN Management Committee members.

The call is open to researchers with interest in any area of European Criminal Law, whether from a theoretical perspective or focusing on topical developments (both legislative and jurisprudential), including:

— the rule of law and fundamental rights in criminal matters;

— harmonisation of substantive or procedural criminal law;

— mutual recognition or other modes of cooperation in criminal matters;

— the operation of EU criminal justice bodies and agencies;

— the interplay between criminal law and other areas (e.g., administrative law, immigration law, internal market law, constitutional law); — the impact of IA and other technological developments;

— the external dimension of the area of freedom, security and justice.

Applications should be sent to eclan.coimbra@gmail.com until 1 March 2026, and should include: (i) a curriculum vitae with full contact details; (ii) an indication of the starting date and envisaged end date of the PhD thesis or post-doctoral project; and (iii) a one-page abstract of the proposed presentation. The organising committee will select up to 15 candidates and communicate the results of the selection procedure by 2 April 2026.
