Call for papers: International Journal of Refugee Law – Call for Special Issue Proposals, Deadline for submission: 4th May 2026

The International Journal of Refugee Law is pleased to announce a Call for proposed Special Issues. Proposals for new Special Issues must align with the journal’s scope by addressing international law relating to forced migration. They should include:

  • Full contact details and a brief biography (maximum 400 words per Guest Editor(s)).
  • A proposed title for the Special Issue.
  • A rationale explaining the theme of the proposed Special Issue and the relevance of its original contribution for the journal (up to 1,000 words).
  • A list of confirmed contributors including institutional affiliations.
  • Titles and abstracts (maximum 250 words each) for all proposed articles. A Special Issue should normally include eight articles plus a short Editorial. If the Editor(s) prefer an article-length introduction instead of an Editorial, the number of additional articles should be limited to seven.
  • A timeline outlining key milestones for completion of each stage of the Special Issue. Guest Editor(s) must commit to the organisation of a workshop (online or in-person) during which the Editor(s) and authors have the opportunity to discuss interim drafts as well as the coherence of the entire publication project.
  • Details on the current status of the project, including whether any papers exist in draft form.
  • An indication of whether the proposal has been or will be submitted elsewhere, along with relevant timelines.

Proposals are welcome from both emerging and more established scholars. Collaborative contributions between academics and practitioners are welcome. We encourage proposals developed by or including scholarships from underrepresented groups in academia and early career researchers.

Proposals for Special Issues will be evaluated based on: relevance to the journal’s scope; original contribution to academic debates; the diversity of perspectives reflected, and; feasibility of completion within the proposed timeframe.

All articles submitted for a selected Special Issue remain subject to peer review. Guest Editor(s) are responsible for ensuring submissions are of suitably high quality before submission to the journal. The journal reserves the right to reject articles before or after peer review if they are not of sufficient quality.

Proposals for Special Issues must be submitted by 4th May 2026 by email to ijrl.editorialoffice@theeditorialhub.com. Outcomes will be notified by mid-June 2026. It is expected the successful proposal would be published in the IJRL in the second half of 2027.

The decision of the Selection Panel, which is constitutive of the Editors-in-Chief and members of the Editorial Board, is final. Prior communication with members of the panel accords no advantage.
Any further enquiries may be addressed to the Editors in Chief at: ijrl.editorialoffice@theeditorialhub.com.
