The School of Legal Studies, CUSAT, has been successfully organizing Summer School on various topics of legal and social significance in contemporary times. Following the successful completion of the ‘First & Second Annual Summer School on Consumer and Competition Law’ held in June 2018 & June 2019, the School of Legal Studies is organizing its Third Annual International Summer School on, Understanding Competition Law: Perspectives from Asian Countries’. This year, however, the summer school will be held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
About the School of Legal Studies
One of the oldest law schools in India, the School of Legal Studies was established in the year 1962 as a part of Kerala University offering post-graduate courses and research in law. The Law School joined the folds of the University of Cochin, in the year 1971, which was later reorganized and renamed Cochin University of Science and Technology in 1986 for the promotion of graduate, post-graduate studies, and advanced research in various fields. Over the decades since its inception, the Law School has blossomed into one of the top institutions among law schools engaged in teaching and research in India. Perhaps the best testimony to the success of this experiment is the presence of SLS alumni as professors and academicians in top law schools in India and as advocates at the various High Courts and the Supreme Court of India. The versatility and quality of the skills of SLS graduates are evident from having its graduates at the helm of the Indian judiciary as Justices of various High Courts in India. Having groomed teachers and scholars apart from lawyers and judges for four decades, SLS has entered into yet another era of producing skilled and versatile graduates working with corporate houses, consulting firms, Public Sector Undertakings, SEBI, other Government bodies, NGOs, and judicial offices.
About the Summer School
Globalization, liberalization, and the development of market systems in India have on one hand improved the quality of life of individuals and on the other hand, have brought stiff competition among the different market players and stakeholders to the forefront. Unhealthy competition often leads to the adoption of anti-competitive practices and thereby causes exploitation of the consumers. Various countries have adopted competition law/antitrust law/antimonopoly laws to deal with the anti-competitive practices in the market. These legislations address the issue of effective competition in the market and seek to curb anti-competitive practices with a view to promoting effective competition in the market and maximization of consumer welfare. Since Competition Law is an emerging subject, this one-week summer school on competition law, will provide an opportunity to the law teachers and researchers to get a comprehensive and in-depth understanding about competition law in India as well as competition law in different Asian countries. On successful completion of the Summer School the Participants will receive a certificate of participation from SLS, CUSAT.
This Summer School is a flagship initiative of the School of Legal Studies and a milestone in the field of Competition Law in India. At present, there are not many institutions in India, who are actually takers of this subject. It is pertinent to note, that the School of Legal Studies happens to be one among the few institutions in India where Competition Law is taught as an undergraduate law subject and as a specialized paper at the postgraduate level. The Summer school will be hosted virtually by the School of Legal Studies, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kerala, India.
