Gender Disparity refers to unequal treatment or perceptions of individuals based on their gender. It arises from differences in socially constructed gender roles. In other words, gender discrimination refers to unfair rights between male and female based on different gender roles which leads to unequal treatment in life. The concept: gender inequality has been widely known in human history but not until the beginning of the 20th century has the transformation of gender relations become “one of the most rapid, profound social changes” (Wright & Rogers 2009).
Gender inequality very much exists in India within the households, workplaces and in society at large. In certain developing nations like India, gender inequality starts manifesting itself at a very early stage, a girl child starts facing discrimination right from the womb and it ends in female feticide. Female child is treated inferior to male child and this is deeply engraved in the mind of the female child. This is more predominant in India as well as other lesser developed countries. Educating a boy is seen as an investment whereas educating a woman is considered an expenditure.
Education is one of the most significant means for empowering an individual or community in general, and women and girls in particular. Level of educational attainment and literacy rate are indicators of general development of any society. Gender equality and empowerment of women are indispensable for achieving prosperity and sustainable development. Since Independence, India has adopted many different paths and strategies for national, social, economic and political development. The situation and status of women also has improved a lot over a period of time.
The government has been making persistent efforts to raise the status of the girl child in the society as well as incentivize her education through various schemes and programs. National Commission for Women keep on organizing such programs in furtherance of Government of India’s initiative to bring equality in society.
