Call for papers
Regarding migrant status, inclusion in labor markets, and the conditions offered by host societies, there is already an increase in the treatments made in the literature and a continuously expressed academic and political interest. The most obvious way of highlighting the political arena through which the negotiation, governance, and determination of the migrant’s position are done is through the labor market and its institutions. In the host society and its labor market, a person’s position depends on and is directly influenced by nationality and/or ethnicity, legal status, gender, and age. It should be noted that little research has been done on the status, attitudes, and strategies of migrants who are not members of the European Union (EU), detained and employed across different EU countries, to integrate and succeed in the labor market of these countries. There has been a diversification—in recent years—of labor mobility from non- EU countries to EU countries—which has led to new trends of return and circular migration, meanwhile. New forms of mobility have influenced different notions to be challenged, such as: belonging, integration, identity, and (several forms of) citizenship. From all these developments—new complex forms and levels of migration—challenges have emerged in the established field of migration studies, such as re-evaluating the links between migration for employment, citizenship, identity, and integration.
The discussions—which the panel intends to carry out—relate to migration flows (permanent, temporary, circular, and return)—at different levels—carried out with the motive of being employed. For example:
• the negotiation and expression of the industrial citizenship of migrant workers — how do they do it—e.g., in implicit and explicit, actions, attitudes, or behaviors?
• The global economic crisis and the EU labor markets: how has this crisis affected these markets? What strategies do migrants use to adapt to this situation?
• Trade unions and migrants: what are their strategies for organizing and representing migrants?
• Migrants and competitive labor market norms: what is the response of migrants to them ?
Migrants and the normative dimension of the host country: how does this dimension affect the inclusion of migrants in the host country’s society and the labor market? What are the migrant strategies of adaption?
• Migrants and governments: in order to encourage the migrant issue, what kind of measures and policies do governments take, etc?
The whole organization will be done in various workshops panels. Particular importance and attention from the panel will be given to reconfiguration and multi-dimensional analysis of the migration policy framework. This will be done by making the connection between policy-making and research—or by “putting into action words”. All this will influence the conference to become a multi-stakeholder and multi-scholars migration event.
At this Conference will be held presentations of papers in front of panels. Various scholars in the field of migration—with different disciplinary backgrounds—will be attracted by this Conference. This Conference aims to exchange and share research experiences and results—on all aspects of migration—of leading academic scientists, researchers, policy- makers, students, practitioners, and research scholars by bringing them all together. All of the above questions, we aim and plan to answer through a combination of empirical and theoretical work—but, papers in which there is the use of empirical approach (in disciplines where such research is done), are slightly more favored.
