NLSIU invites applications for:
one (01) position of Consultant under the project on ‘Women in Karnataka Police’. It is a contractual assignment
(07 months), based anywhere in India (remote).
The position is under National Law School of India University, Bangalore with support from the Hanns Seidel Foundation.
About the Project
The ‘Women in Karnataka Police’ Project 2021 – 2023 involves research and training around issues related to women’s role and growth within police services in India. It includes an independent assessment of challenges facing police women in Karnataka. This study is in its final stage and will culminate with a report that will provide recommendations to the Karnataka State Police on ensuring women’s equitable role in policing. Additionally, the project seeks to develop a training module on issues related to gender and policing with a focus on understanding gender-based inequalities and discrimination within police services, importance of gender equality for effective policing, and police reform initiatives and the role of supervisory leaders in promoting an inclusive organizational culture. The module will be designed for use in police training across the country.
Role Description
The position’s key objective is to develop a training module on gender equality in policing aimed mainly at middle level supervisory officers in the police in India. The position allows for remote working but will involve frequent travel to Bangalore and other districts in Karnataka. The main responsibilities include:
● Map existing training modules on gender equality in policing in India and internationally through desk research and interviews as necessary
● Design and develop a draft training module in coordination with the project team, NLSIU faculty, police officers and trainers, and external subject matter experts
● Subject to necessary approvals, pilot the training in Karnataka in coordination with the Karnataka State Police
● Revise the module based on feedback and learning from the pilot
● Facilitate consultations with external subject matter experts
● Timely and thorough handling of administrative responsibilities related to the consultancy under the project
● Any other task under the project considered necessary in aid of the consultancy objectives
This is a full-time position involving desk research as well as service delivery (to a limited extent). This position will report to the Project Director and will also be under the supervision of NLSIU faculty members overseeing the project.
Who should apply
Candidates with a Master’s Degree in Law or Social Sciences from a recognised University
Demonstrated academic interest and engagement with issues related to criminal justice, policing and gender
Demonstrated proficiency in speaking, reading and writing Kannada and English fluently
At least three (03) years of experience as a researcher
Ability to meticulously use different legal research databases
In addition, the candidate must have:
– Ability to work in a team, contributing to both team and individual goals
– Analytical and Research skills, collation skills, communication skills (written and oral), time-
management skills
– Demonstrated proficiency in the use of G-Suite, MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel
– Self-driven, collaborative as well as the ability to work independently, attention to detail
