Call for Papers: Deepfakes and the Law, 20th May 2024

City, University of London is hosting a day conference on the subject of ‘Deepfakes and the Law’ on Monday 20 May 2024 at its Northampton Square campus, London.

The theme of the conference is to explore the existing and potential relationships between Deepfake technology and the law. These relationships will cut across a range of existing legal fields of inquiry, and it is intended that the conference will draw on expertise both legal and non-legal in an interdisciplinary fashion. As such, we particularly welcome submissions from those with an interdisciplinary background in (e.g.) the arts, social sciences, history and/or information technology.

We will have themed panels on “Deepfakes, Image-Based Abuse & Consent”, “Deepfakes, Disinformation & Truth”, and two “open” panels. There will also be a round-table discussion session open to post-graduate or early-career researchers, which will also be on an “open” theme.

The conference organisers, Dr Thomas Bennett (City) and Rebecca Moosavian (Leeds), are inviting submissions for panel papers, and also for PGR/ECR participants for the round-table. Panel participants should expect to speak for 20 minutes with 10 minutes for questions/discussion. Round-table timings will depend on the number of participants.

It is intended that there will be an opportunity to contribute papers to an edited collection following the conference.

All participants will be invited to attend the conference, and funding will be provided for their travel.

For further information and/or to apply to become a participant please send a brief (250 words max) expression of interest, outlining your proposed paper, to both [email protected] and [email protected] by 13 November 2023.
