Junior Researcher in International Human Rights Law
The Asser Institute, based in The Hague, and affiliated with the University of Amsterdam is seeking an enthusiastic JUNIOR RESEARCHER IN INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS LAW on a full-time basis (38 hours per week/1 FTE – 32 hours per week also considered). They will work on the ‘Enabling Civil Society Efforts to Address the Misuse, Diversion, and Abuse of Arms Exports in Latin America’ project and contribute to strengthen our research capacity regarding human rights and arms trade in Guatemala within the Research Strand on ‘In the public interest: accountability of the state and the prosecution of crimes.’
The organisation
The Asser Institute is a research centre for international and European law, located in The Hague, with a high public and international profile. Its mission is to contribute to the development of international and European law by conducting independent fundamental research, policy-oriented research, and commissioned research, as well as by initiating and facilitating academic and expert meetings, (professional) education, and public events with a view to disseminating knowledge on international and European law.
Tasks and responsibilities:
The main tasks will include:
- Develop and execute human rights-related research in the context of the project on ‘Enabling Civil Society Efforts to Address the Misuse, Diversion, and Abuse of Arms Exports in Latin America’;
- Conduct capacity-building activities with civil society organisations in Guatemala;
- Prepare instruction materials for training sessions relating to human rights and arms trafficking;
- Prepare and submit research publications, including one co-authored publication to a peer-reviewed journal on the human rights implications of arms trafficking and diversion together with the Project Leader;
- Assist with the organisation of conferences, expert meetings and other events related to the project in The Hague and Guatemala, including administrative tasks;
- Act as the daily supervisor of a research intern working with the project.
What do you have to offer?
Your experience and profile:
The successful candidate will meet the following requirements:
- Completed master’s degree in international law;
- Demonstrated research focus or experience in international human rights law;
- An interest in arms trade;
- Fluency in both English and Spanish;
- Basic knowledge of EU law (in particular, regarding the EU internal market, EU external relations and trade regulation);
- Experience writing and editing academic papers;
- Enthusiastic about contributing to a stimulating research community;
- Demonstrable communication skills;
- Enthusiastic about the outreach and dissemination of research output;
- Able to work as part of a multicultural team;
- Flexible, versatile, and creative;
- Able to work in a changeable & fast-moving environment;
- Proactive and collaborative character, suggesting solutions and approaches, anticipating problems, and foreseeing potential challenges;
- Willing to travel overseas;
- Administratively competent and able to manage competing urgent demands.
Our offer
You will be appointed at the University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam Law School, and seconded to The T.M.C. Asser Instituut in The Hague.
Remuneration depends on the actual level of education, experience and knowledge, ranges between € 3,226 to €5,090 gross per month (scale 10), based on a full time equivalent (38 hours), according to the collective labour agreement of the Dutch Universities (VSNU). Secondary benefits at Dutch universities are attractive and include 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus.
This appointment will be for a period of eighteen months.
