Call for Papers! The Law and The Amazon! Max Planck Law Network! Forum Latin America!

The Forum Latin America Initiative from the Max Planck Law Network is organizing a conference that will address the topic ‘The Law & The Amazon: Challenges for a Sustainable Future’, aiming to bring together legal scholars, sociologists, anthropologists, and leaders from civil society, to discuss ongoing critical issues while giving room to Latin American perspectives.

Topics of Interest

The Forum Latin America Initiative invites contributions that explore a broad range of topics, including but not limited to the following:

  • Climate change policies and international normativization
  • Constitutionalism, UN Sustainable Development Goals, and legal implications
  • Indigenous rights, land claims, and human rights in the Amazon
  • Plurinationalisms, justice systems, and domestic-international legal dynamics
  • Future environmental law preservation efforts, including criminalization
  • Urban-rural inequalities, regulation, digitization, labour issues
  • Methodologies for legal research in the Amazon
  • Other challenges affecting the Amazon

Information for Submission

Abstract submission deadline: 17 June 2024
Notification sent to participants: 28 June 2024
Final draft submission deadline: 30 September 2024
Languages (submissions and conference): English and Spanish. Simultaneous translation is considered.

Submission Format

Abstract submissions should be sent in PDF format and include the following:

  • A title that reflects the focus of your paper
  • An abstract of no more than 750 words
  • A brief biography of the author(s), highlighting relevant expertise and affiliations.

Final drafts of the papers should adhere to the following:

  • Must not exceed 8,000 words, footnotes included
  • Be original, unpublished work

We invite submissions, in English or Spanish, from diverse areas of legal scholarship, as well as from disciplines outside the legal field.
