About the Opportunity

The National Law School of India invites applications from practising lawyers and legal professionals for a capacity-building workshop on ‘public interest lawyering’. The Ford Foundation Chair on Public Interest Law and the IBA-CLE Professorial Chair in Continuing Legal Education at NLSIU is organizing the workshop. The workshop will focus on public interest lawyering, examining the strategic role of public interest law in bringing about social change and the challenges confronting public interest law today.

About the Workshop

This workshop is open to those who are:

  • keen to develop varied perspectives on public interest lawyering in India
  • examine the strategic role of public interest law in bringing about social change and current challenges
  • identify and hone the skill sets necessary to work in public interest law, and
  • interact with lawyers and academicians working in the area of public interest law
  • This workshop examines the possibilities and limitations of public interest lawyering and how legal and non-legal priorities underpin public interest practice. The workshop will draw upon the experience of public interest lawyers, scholarship on public interest law, and expert narratives.
  • The workshop seeks to enhance the skill set of legal professionals and provide a greater understanding of how legal and non-legal strategies can effectively combine to initiate social transformation.

Eligibility

Young law practitioners and legal professionals are interested in developing theoretical perspectives and a valuable skill set in Public Interest Lawyering.

It will commence at 9 a.m. on June 1, 2024, and conclude at 2 p.m. on June 2, 2024.

How to Apply?

Potential participants interested in enrolling in the course should submit a formal request for enrolment through the link along with the following documents:

  • CV (not more than two pages)
  • Statement of Purpose (500 words – indicating why and how this workshop would be helpful for your career)
  • Copy of the Bar Council Identity Card
  • Selection shall be primarily based on the candidate’s CV, academic and professional background, and statement of purpose. During the selection process, diversity of backgrounds shall be given due consideration.

Fee

As there will be limited slots, registration will be based on a selection and subject to full payment of a participation fee of Rs. 6000 + 18% GST, along with a small platform fee. Payment must be made within four days of communication to those selected. The workshop fee includes lunch on both days and refreshments. As this is a non-residential program, there will be no on-campus accommodation.

Certificate

A certificate of participation will be issued to participants attending all the sessions.

*Please note that no fee will be refunded should the participant cancel the registration or fail to participate in the workshop.
