The Department of Media Studies is looking for fixed-term Lecturers to teach in the Media Studies BA programme, specifically in the track New Media & Digital Culture. You can find the full curriculum here. Lecturers who have a PhD may also be asked to teach courses in the related Master’s programmes.

Candidates should have considerable knowledge of the study of New Media and Digital Culture in the humanities, especially in the areas of digital research methods and critical internet culture. They will also have demonstrable affinity with the media arts, media history, media theory and social media critique. Up-to-date web vernacular knowledge is desirable. Practical experience in working analytically with online platforms (e.g., Wikipedia, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Reddit, 4chan, Telegram, TikTok) and web-based applications and tools (e.g., social media analytics) is also desirable.

Successful candidates will be a member of the subject team for New Media.

What are you going to do?

Lecturers will teach mainly in the bachelor’s degree in courses concerned with such topics as data journalism, media theory, digital practices, digital methods and information analytics, media history as well as contemporary themes in digital culture, all in the program of Media and Information. With a PhD, Lecturers also may also teach in the Master’s degree program and supervise theses.

Tasks and responsibilities:

Under the supervision of a course coordinator, you will be teaching in the Media Studies BA programmes, specifically in the track New Media and Digital Culture. Your tasks will comprise:

  • teaching seminar groups;
  • marking assignments, papers and/or theses, providing input on tests and test questions, entering marks;
  • attending meetings and lectures, preparing for teaching, updating and developing course materials or assignments according to relevant teaching methods, working in collaboration with colleagues and the course coordinator;
  • coordinating practical matters relating to your own seminar group[s] (such as handling administrative matters and communicating with students)
  • supervising theses (Bachelor’s and [with a PhD] Master’s)  and providing other individual supervision to students (mentoring, coaching and/or supervising internships

Your experience and profile

Candidates need to have the following qualifications:

  • minimum qualification: a research-oriented Master’s degree in Media Studies or a related discipline;
  • you are pedagogically/didactically competent (able to cater to students’ starting situation, to teach a curriculum that has already been developed, to supervise students and to make an active contribution in meetings with fellow lecturers);
  • if you will be teaching at a Master’s programme, you preferably have a PhD in a relevant field;
  • teaching or teaching-support experience at university level, specifically in Media Studies;
  • affinity with ICTs in academic education and experience with digital and audio-visual equipment;
  • team spirit and a willingness to participate in activities of the New Media team and to collaborate in teaching teams;
  • administrative experience and skills;
  • University Teaching Qualification, or willingness to acquire this within two years.
  • you are able to teach in English.
  • you have a good command of the Dutch language. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer the opportunity to take and pass the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language programme II;

What can we offer you?

We offer temporary employment for a period of four years with a probationary period of two months. The employment contract is for 30.4 hours a week. The preferred starting date is 01 September 2024.

Your salary, depending on relevant experience on commencement of the employment contract, ranges between € 3,226 to € 5,090 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. Favourable tax agreements may apply to applicants moving from abroad. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
