ABOUT THE CONFERENCE

Criminal law is the foundation of the criminal justice system, and owing to greater demands for peace and harmony within the society, it brings substantial changes to the criminal justice system. Here, the basic principles essential for understanding the criminal law include the concepts of criminal acts, criminal intent, concurrence between act and intent, causality, responsibility, and defenses. In this regard, it is imperative to address the question: what distinguishes “criminal law” from all other laws? This question is central to both criminal law theory and criminal justice reform. Clarity about the distinctive feature(s) of criminal law is important, especially when there is no clear consensus among contemporary scholars or reformers about what makes the criminal law unique. Having said so, the domain of criminal law and justice is an ever engaging and thought-provoking realm of law, particularly in the light of issues such as the use of police powers, the rights of the suspect during the police investigation, access to legal advice, the trial process, etc.
