Panel Title: Migration Aspirations, Social Mobility and (Im)mobility Among Displaced Ukrainians
Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, displaced Ukrainians have received temporary protection in European Union member countries. However, nearly three years after the Russian invasion, many of these displaced individuals continue to struggle with their living conditions in their host countries. Upon arrival, they were provided with housing, humanitarian aid, social benefits, access to employment and education at all levels, but in many countries, these benefits have recently been reduced or withdrawn, leaving displaced Ukrainians needing to fend for themselves. Many displaced Ukrainian need to work in low-skilled jobs, and language barriers and inadequate housing further complicate their situation. These challenges have negatively impacted their social mobility and may even lead to downward mobility or precarious living conditions.
Migration is a dynamic, temporal, and evolving process, in which migrants often decide whether to move onward, return, or stay. Their decisions are not driven solely by internal needs and desires but are also influenced by drivers that anchor or disanchor them (Grzymała-Kazłowska, 2016). This panel proposal invites papers that focus on the interplay of migration aspirations of displaced Ukrainians, their social mobility and (non)mobility (in terms of moving onward, return, or stay), exploring how their ambitions are shaped by inner intentions and outer drivers. The proposal welcomes papers that examine the interplay of these notions, as well as those that focus exclusively on the aspirations of Ukrainian refugees, social mobility, or (im)mobility.
