Scientific Reports Advances in pituitary research
The pituitary gland is located at the base of the brain, just below the hypothalamus, which regulates pituitary endocrine secretion. The gland consists of two main regions: the anterior pituitary (adenohypophysis) and the posterior pituitary (neurohypophysis). The anterior pituitary secretes hormones from epithelial endocrine cells, including growth hormone, thyroid stimulating hormone, prolactin, follicle stimulating and luteinizing hormone, and adrenocorticotropic hormone. The posterior pituitary secretes two hormones synthesized by the hypothalamus, antidiuretic hormone and oxytocin. Given the diverse range of roles of these hormones, the pituitary gland affects the regulation of many aspects of bodily function, including body composition, mood, metabolism, and sleep levels. For example, pituitary dysfunction can lead to growth disorders, such as acromegaly due to increased growth hormone secretion, and fertility disorders, such as prolactinoma, a noncancerous tumor of the pituitary that reduces estrogen and testosterone levels. Though pituitary diseases are rare, given their multiorgan and multisystemic morbidity treatment is complex and is often life-long, presenting a significant burden to patient quality of life.
This Collection gathers primary research that presents an advance in our understanding of the mechanisms underlying pituitary function and development or explores potential improvements in diagnosis and management of pituitary disorders.
