Ocean energy
The ocean holds great potential as a source of renewable energy from waves, tides, or salt and temperature gradients. The European Union alone estimates that by 2050 up to 10% of its energy demands could be fulfilled by energy harnessed from the oceans. Research on this sustainable energy however, lags when compared to alternative energy sources and concerns have been raised regarding its potential effects on aquatic ecosystems and biodiversity. Developing innovative strategies to harness energy from the oceans, or further understand its environmental impact, will contribute to realise its full potential.
This Collection invites original research on the ocean as a sustainable energy source, from technological advances, to modelling or field studies on its ecological impact.
Submitting a paper for consideration
To submit your manuscript for consideration at Scientific Reports as part of this Collection, please follow the steps detailed on this page. On the first page of our online submission system, under “I’m submitting:” select the option “A research article”. Under the “Details” tab, authors should select the Collection title: “Ocean energy” from the drop-down option. Authors should express their interest in the Collection in their cover letter.
Accepted papers are published on a rolling basis as soon as they are ready.
