Call for Papers
Workshop: Redefining EU Law for a Volatile and Uncertain World
The City Law School
City St George’s, University of London
Wednesday, 26 June 2025

Deadline for abstract submission: Wednesday, 30 April 2025.

The organisers, Dr Sanna Elfving and Dr Ilias Kapsis, invite submissions of paper abstracts for the workshop ‘Redefining EU Law for a Volatile and Uncertain World’ to be held at the City Law School, City St George’s, University of London on 26 June 2025. This conference is organised by the EU and Competition Law Section
of SLS and is supported by the Society of Legal Scholars (SLS) and the Institute for the Study of European Law at the City Law School.

This workshop focuses on emerging issues facing the EU, particularly outlined in the EU’s 2024-2029 strategic agenda, which set out several priority areas to guide the work of the EU institutions until 2029, including upholding European values within the EU, ensuring coherent and influential external action, bolstering the EU’s competitiveness, and making a success of the green and digital transitions.

We encourage contributions from researchers across all career stages, including early-career researchers (ECRs) and doctoral researchers. The workshop aims to support the development of links and networks
among scholars and offer opportunities for interaction with more established scholars to ECRs and doctoral researchers. We hope to attract speakers and papers covering a broad spectrum of EU and Competition Law and representing diverse perspectives and backgrounds.

We welcome abstract submissions (maximum 300 words) for papers that engage with one of the following legal topics:
• Competitiveness of the EU
• Sustainability
• Gender equality
• External relations
• Respect for EU’s core values

Those interested in presenting their work should submit their abstracts (up to 300 words and a short bio) by email to [email protected] copying in [email protected] by Wednesday, 30 April 2025, at 23:59 (UK time), using the subject line ‘EU law workshop’. Be sure to include your name,  affiliation, and contact information in your submission. We aim to get back to authors whose papers have been accepted within one to two weeks after the deadline for submission.

Travel and Accommodation
The workshop will be in person only, and participation will be free of charge, but delegates will be expected to cover their own travel and accommodation expenses. Food and refreshments will be provided by the organisers.
The organisers have a limited hardship fund to help cover (or contribute to) the travel and accommodation costs of doctoral researchers (PGRs) and early career researchers (ECRs), whose abstract has been accepted, and who might be otherwise unable to attend for financial reasons. Individuals can apply to the fund by
submitting an abstract (and being selected as speakers at the conference) and indicating in their submission email that they wish to apply to the hardship fund.
