Background
At the core of the Max Planck Foundation’s mission is the provision of technical legal assistance to developing countries in transition or emerging from conflict (for more information, see: https://www.mpfpr.de). Through legal consulting and legal capacity building activities, the Foundation assists states endeavouring to develop their legal and political systems. The Foundation offers specialist legal expertise to institutions and professionals where this facilitates their reforms and contributes to the rule of law in the country.
Job Summary
Research Fellows will implement project activities by preparing and administering workshops, carrying out and presenting research and providing technical legal advice with a thematic focus on international and International human rights law.
Key Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Head of Project, the successful candidate shall:
undertake advanced legal research;
draft training materials;
implement legal training workshops for states, legal professionals and other target groups;
provide technical legal advice and assistance to project partners;
travel to the region to implement activities and liaise with local partners;
contribute to the administrative and logistical aspects of project implementation; and
carry out project reporting, monitoring and evaluation
Selection Criteria
Education and Professional Experience
Essential:
Advanced degree in law (LL.M; Ph.D.) or 3+ years demonstrable experience as a Lawyer.
Extensive knowledge of public international law and international human rights law is required; and
Ability to deliver high-level academic work.
Desirable:
Practical experience in Central Asia;
Experience implementing capacity building workshops for state and civil society actors; and
Knowledge in the law applicable to counterterrorism and deradicalisation.
Language Proficiency
Fluency in English and Russian is essential (written and oral).

Strong interpersonal skills in a multi-cultural environment, including cultural awareness, excellent communication skills and the ability to work independently as well as in a team setting:
Flexibility, including demonstrated ability to work under pressure, to adapt to changing work and project circumstances and to respond to unforeseen developments;
Excellent organisational skills, e. skilled in setting priorities and meeting deadlines, and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously;
Ability to present high-level academic work to non-experts in a service-oriented manner; and
Computer literacy skills with standard software.
Miscellaneous
All Positions are contingent upon funding.
Research Fellows are based in Heidelberg, Germany, with frequent travels to the region.
Remuneration will be based on the Collective Agreement on Public Service Wages under German Law (Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst – TVöD).
