The co-organizers will hold the 8th AIELN Conference on 1-2 December 2023. The theme of the
The conference is “The New Generation of Economic Agreements in the Asia-Pacific.” The conference aims to provide an interdisciplinary forum for academics, private practitioners, and government officials to present works in progress across the spectrum of international economic law issues related to Asia. The tentative schedule for the Conference is as follows:
- Friday, 1 December 2023: Opening Ceremony and Conference Sessions
- Saturday, 2 December 2023: Conference Sessions and Closing Ceremony
II. Submission of Paper Proposals
In recent years, the global community has witnessed a growing number of economic agreements attempting to harmonise trade liberalisation with a broad range of public policies, including public health, climate change, diversity, labour, human rights, small and medium enterprises, anti-corruption, etc. What is the current development and practices adopted in the world or in the Asia-Pacific? What is the relationship between these public policy issues and economic activities? Why and how do these public policies enter the field of international economic laws? What is the effect or impact of this development on the economic relationship between the contracting parties or on the pursuit of these policies? Will this development reshape our understanding of international economic laws? These issues all warrant careful consideration and analysis as the new generation of international economic laws develops.
The organizing committee welcomes proposals on the following areas of international economic laws:
- Trade and public policies (e.g., carbon border tax, fisheries subsidies, TRIPS waiver, food security, trade and public health, trade and sustainability, trade and gender, trade and the indigenous, trade and diversity, trade and labour, trade and human right, and other trade law issues related to various public policies);
- Investment and public policies (e.g., sustainable investment, green economy, investment and small and medium enterprise, investment and gender, investment and the indigenous, investment and labour, investment and human right, and other investment law issues related to various public policies);
- Digital economy and public policies (e.g., electronic commerce and cybersecurity, cross-border data transfer and privacy, new technology and human right, new technology and sustainability, new technology and inclusion, and other digital law issues related to various public policies);
- International finance and public policies (e.g., sustainable finance, supply chain finance, financial inclusion, bailout in the crisis, finance and diversity, and other international financial law issues related to various public policies);
- Other aspects of Asia-Pacific’s development in economic agreements in the new generation.
Paper proposals of no more than 500 words must be submitted by 30 June 2023, using the following online submission form:

Please also provide a short biography, including recent publications in English.
The organizing committee welcomes proposal submissions from SIEL members, as well as from non-members. Junior faculty members and junior researchers are particularly welcome. The organizing committee will select proposals and announce the results in August 2023. Paper presenters are required to submit complete unpublished papers by 15 November 2023. The footnotes should conform to the US Bluebook format.
