Historical Perspectives on Race in the Marketplace

The Journal of Historical Research in Marketing invites submissions for a special issue focused on “Historical Perspectives on Race in the Marketplace”. This special issue aims to bring forth new evidence-based research from scholars who introduce novel information, data and perspectives on historical topics which are typically marginalized or excluded from traditional academic publications. In particular, this issue focuses on historical aspects of race in the marketplace in global contexts by exploring the experiences, viewpoints and impacts of the past concerning racialized markets and actors.

List of Topic Areas

For this special issue of JHRM, specific topics might include but are not limited to historical perspectives on:

  • Past racialized marketplace practices explaining contemporary and future markets.
  • Historical perspectives on the mutual construction of race and markets – such as housing, educational opportunities, labor/employment, entrepreneurship, banking/financial systems, health care, etc.
  • Racial perspectives on historical developments of markets, market segments, brands, and marketing practices anywhere across the globe.
  • Historical figures or organizations and their contributions to marketing thought, marketing practice and/or scholarship concerning race and markets.
  • Race-related sector studies with an historical focus including products and services surrounding – for example: health care, food, fashion and beauty products,  transportation, travel/tourism, leisure, music, entertainment, and technology markets.
  • Historical racialization/colorism and influences on consumer marketplace experiences.
  • Marketplace experiences by racialized groups that are historically overlooked, marginalized or forgotten.
  • Anti-racist social movements (i.e. public demonstrations, protests,  boycotts, selective patronage, etc.) which shaped or re-shaped markets.

Authors should select (from the drop-down menu) the special issue title at the appropriate step in the submission process, i.e. in response to ““Please select the issue you are submitting to”.
Submitted articles must not have been previously published, nor should they be under consideration for publication anywhere else, while under review for this journal.
