Overview
This course provides an interdisciplinary introduction to the relationship between public health, law, and human rights within the South African context. Students explore how legal frameworks, policy processes, and human rights principles shape public health systems and outcomes. With a strong focus on health equity, social justice, and community participation, the course equips participants to critically analyse public health laws and policies, understand advocacy and strategic litigation, and communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders. By the end of the course, students will be able to apply ethical and rights-based approaches to public health challenges. A quality-assured certificate from the University of the Witwatersrand is issued on successful completion.

Format
1.5-hour weekly lectures every Thursday from 4:30pm-6:00pm

  • Introduction to public health and human rights
  • Unpacking health promotion and prioritisation
  • Understanding the policy process
  • Strategic litigation in public health
  • Advocacy in public health
