Call for Bursary Applications 2027: Chair in Urban Law and Sustainability Governance – Stellenbosch University, Faculty of Law
The Chair in Urban Law and Sustainability Governance invites expresssion of interest to join the Chair as a full-time Masters (LLM) student in 2027.
Applicants are expected to clearly demonstrate interest to help advance the focus of the Chair’s research on specific aspects of urban law, climate change law, environmental law or the intersection of law and sustainability governance relevant in South Africa and other comparable legal jurisdictions.
Successful candidates will conduct their studies under the supervision of Prof Anél du Plessis. Postgraduate students in the Chair are residential students (Stellenbosch) and study full-time.
Note: the available bursaries only partially cover costs of study. Unfortunately, no full cost of study / wrap-around bursaries are available.
Minimum requirements:
An average of 68% or above for the 3rd and 4th year LLB modules.
Compliance with all other SU requirements for postgraduate study.

• CV (with two academic references listed)
• Copy of ID
• Copy of full academic record
• Copies of degree certificates (if applicable)
• For LLM: copy of a completed and authentic written assignment (eg for a LLB module) accompanied by an AI Use Declaration
• 2 page-memo sufficiently explaining interest in joining this specific Chair and with a clear indication of the research area of interest. This memo may not be developed with the help of any AI tools. A statement to this effect is required.
