Call for applications – Post-doctoral fellow/ Manager: LLM/MPhil (Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa)

The Centre for Human Rights seeks a qualified person who can combine the roles of a post-doctoral fellow and act as manager of the Centre’s flagship Master’s programme in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa. This is a one-year position but is renewable depending on the availability of funding, the Centre’s operational needs and the incumbent’s performance. The successful applicant should be able to start on 1 August 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter.


Requirements:

  • Minimum: A doctoral degree in human rights law or in a closely related field.
  • Desirable: A professional qualification in project management


Experience

  • Minimum: Some project management experience, preferably in tertiary education and/or civil society sector; Experience working with donors across the African continent
  • Desirable: Experience  as part of diverse, multi-national team


Competencies

Networking; negotiating; project management; financial management; international human rights instrument and mechanisms, particularly with respect to Africa; word processing; spreadsheet; English competence; French competence; leadership skills but with an ability to work in a team; organisational skills; interpersonal  and communication skills; ability to work independently; ability to work under pressure.


Responsibility as post-doctoral fellow:

  • Research on topics related to human rights in Africa;
  • Publication of at least 2 accredited research outputs per year;
  • Supervision of Master’s students’ mini-dissertations;
  • Supervision of LLB students’ essays;
  • Seek and review blog posts for the Global Campus Human Rights Preparedness;
  • Co-supervision of doctoral theses.

Responsibility as Programme Manager:  LLM/MPhil (Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa)

To provide intellectual leadership and to oversee the overall management of the activities of the Master’s in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA)


Overall project management

  • Manages all activities and programme resources of the Master’s programme in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa;
  • Monitors programme progress against expectations and milestones;
  • Manages relationship with the Global Campus of Human Rights;
  • Drafts narrative and financial reports for projects for submission to donors;


Stakeholder management

  • Liaise with and convene meetings with 12 partner faculties across the African continent;
  • Manages and maintains relationships with partner organisations, institutions, development partners, students, donors, academia and related groups.


Programme funding

  • Identifies potential funding sources for programme activities;
  • Manages the finances of the programme;
  • Oversee programme spending in line with budget;
  • Accounts for all expenditure for the programme and reports to the donors;
  • Compiles and submits budgets and proposals as required;
  • Contributes to the drafting of proposals by other staff members as and when required
  • Human rights promotion and education
  • Liaises with other organisations working in the field of human rights to keep abreast with developments in the area;
  • Champions the promotion of human rights in Africa;
  • Lectures and trains on human rights in Africa


Monitoring evaluation and reporting of all programme activities

  • Develop and improve monitoring, evaluation plans for the programme;
  • Develop monitoring and impact indicators for project activities;
  • Monitor all programme activities, expenditure and progress towards achieving programme outputs;
  • Report monthly, quarterly, half yearly and annually on progress on all programme activities to the Director, relevant donors and funders;
  • Report accurately, transparently and timely to the funders in accordance with the terms specified in the grant agreements;
  • Formulate strategies for improving efficiency and effectiveness of the delivery of programme activities;
  • Provide input and participate in the organisation of the annual project reviews and planning workshops as well as the annual report;
  • Monitor and evaluate the long term effects and impact of the activities of the programme and sustainability of programme results


Contribute to communications and media engagements of the programme

  • Implement an information and communications strategy for the Programme in consultation with the Centre’s Communications Manager.
  • Update regularly the Programme’s website.
  • Develop publicity materials to raise awareness of the Programme.
  • Develop media contacts and publicise the achievements of the Programme.
  • Raise awareness and maintain the profile of the Programme through different platforms including social media.
  • Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with relevant role players.
  • Write and circulate press releases as well as undertake media advocacy as and when necessary.


Human resources management

  • Manage programme staff to ensure delivery of objectives.
