Call for Papers

The era of privatization and limited government is over. A convergence of factors is causing policy-makers of both political parties to think more deeply about the role of an activist government in confronting the great crises of the moment (climate change; public health); in responding to geopolitical competition; and in improving the lives and well-being of the general public.

The University of St. Thomas Journal of Law and Public Policy is the inter-disciplinary Journal of the University of St. Thomas School of Law. The Conference on Revitalizing Public Goods is intended to explore the dimensions of this new and dramatic shift in the responsibilities of government. The Journal, therefore, welcomes proposals to study the following themes, reflected in the Conference’s focus:

(1) Climate Change

(2) Public Health

(3) The U.S. Innovation and Competition Act

(4) The Meaning of Infrastructure

(5) Industrial Policy and Strategic Industry

(6) Labor, Wages, and Workplace Conditions

(7) Education (primary, secondary, college, and vocational)

(8) Political Philosophy

(9) History

Proposals should be no longer than 300 words. They may be submitted to Professor Charles J. Reid, Jr., School of Law, University of St. Thomas (MN), [email protected]. Proposals are due by September 15, 2021.

The Conference is intended to consist of a hybrid of in-person and virtual presentations. Papers are to be presented as part of an all-day Symposium at the University of St. Thomas on November 12, 2021. Speakers should be ready to offer summaries of their research in presentations of approximately fifteen or twenty minutes’ length. Speakers will subsequently submit formal papers for publication in the Journal of Law and Public Policy. The final drafts will be due around January 1, 2022.
