Conducting Research and Revisiting Research Methods in Education and Doctoral Studies in the (Post) COVID-19 Era: Challenges and Opportunities
The London Institute invites you to submit an abstract to the London Institute Research Methodology Conference (RMC-2022) that will be held in partnership with Coventry University’s Centre for Global Learning (GLEA) on 20th April 2022.
The pandemic has generated distinct challenges and a renewed spotlight on innovative ways of approaching doctoral studies, particularly in online spaces. However, alongside these challenges, many researchers have also been presented with new opportunities for global exchange and communication. These opportunities, however, remain unevenly distributed between more dominant global “centers” of academic elites and the “margins” of knowledge production (Hooks, 2000; Vatansever, 2020).
We are interested in proposals addressing methodological challenges in designing and conducting research during the pandemic with marginalised groups, under-represented populations, and non-traditional students who may have been disproportionately excluded from mainstream educational life, and particularly from Higher Education. Researchers from marginalized backgrounds are particularly welcomed to contribute to the conversation of research at/with the margins. We are also interested in proposals exploring innovative methodological approaches grounded in the epistemologies of the margins (e.g. decolonial/post-colonial methods, indigenous ways of knowing, anti-oppressive approaches).
Addressing these challenges and opportunities, the Research Methodology Conference provides an important opportunity for established academics, early-career and postgraduate researchers from across the Social Sciences, Arts, and Humanities.
This conference will enable participants to i) share their research experiences during the pandemic, ii) get feedback from their peers and leading academics and iii) develop their understanding of methods and methodologies in global contexts and within the context of continued uncertainty and precarity. Through the one-day conference, attendees will be able to explore, empirical, methodological, and ethical issues and challenges in the (post-)COVID-19 era. In doing so, participants will have opportunities to be exposed to new and innovative approaches and methods employed during the pandemic and into a new post-Covid era.
The conference invites abstracts including but not limited to the following topics:
- Methodological choices and challenges;
- Decolonising research methodologies;
- Ethical and legal issues;
- Digital Research, use of new technological tools and innovative approaches;
- Research design, methods of data collection and fieldwork and analysis;
- Presentation and dissemination of research outcomes;
- Engaging marginalized audiences in research;
- Limitations and future directions;
