The School of Law and Social Justice will host its first Summer School on the Law of the Council of Europe this July 2023.

Theme
Europe is at a crossroads. Its future, its stability, and prosperity depend on how effectively it will respond to the crucial – old and new – challenges that it is facing. This summer school will bring together key decision-makers from the Council of Europe and leading scholars to discuss the ways in which the Council of Europe system can stand up to these challenges. These include rising illiberal democracies, the Russian aggression against Ukraine, and the consequent expulsion of the Russian Federation from the Council of Europe, but also climate change, public health emergencies, such as the one caused by COVID-19, and economic crises. The outcomes of the Summits of Heads of State and Government of the Council of Europe in Reykjavik, Iceland will also be discussed.
Format
The Summer School will be an educational space for interactive, engaging learning, and discussion. The Summer School will last for two weeks, from 3 to 14 July 2023. Seminars and workshops will be led by high-profile invited researchers and practitioners. These activities will be complemented by interactive sessions delivered by academic staff members from the School of Law and Social Justice at the University of Liverpool.
The participants of the Summer School are invited to attend a conference on EU accession to the ECHR which will take place in Liverpool on 14 and 15 July 2023.
