An Intellectual Property Right pertains to any original creation of the human intellect such as artists, librarv, technical or scientific creation. Intellectual Property Rights (IPRS) refers to the legal rights given by the state to the inventor/creator to protect the invention/creation for a certain period of time. These legal rights confer an exclusive riqht to the inventor/creator or the assignee to fully utilise the invention/creation for a given period of time.
IPRs illustrate the nation’s ability to translate knowledge and thereby create social good and wealth through innovations. These innovations hold the key to any nations’ prosperity as well as processing of knowledge. Moreover, it has a primary significance in our day-to-day lives. Thus, it is very well settled that the protection of IPR is vital to the development of the overall modern economy.
The protection of Intellectual Property is a crucial instrument for encouraqing innovation investment and ensuring a return on the significant investment of time, money, and effort made in creating outstanding and unique creations. Patents, trademarks, and other legal protections of intellectual property have encouraged development and paved the way for groundbreaking innovations that have benefited the world in a variety of ways. India has slowly but steadily begun to recognise IPR over the last few decades. India is evolving as a result of the expansion of the Indian economy, which is being supported by billion-dollar Indian start-ups, multinational corporations (MNCs) moving to India for talent, sales, and research, and the expansion of think tanks and technology research activities. We are transitioning from a country that consumes Intellectual Property to one that produces it.
In the light of the increasing significance of IPRS, the DPIIT-IPR Chair, Centre for Research on Intellectual Property Rights Law (CeRIP) and IQAC of National Law University and Judicial Academy, Assam (NLUJAA) is organising an Online Short Term Course on Intellectual Property Rights: Contemporary Issues by IP Practitioners from leading IP Law Firms from July 10 to 14, 2023.
The Programme aims to provide comprehensive knowledge and practical skills to individuals and organizations regarding the protection, management, and utilization of intellectual property assets. This programme will cover a wide range of topics related to IPR, addressing the needs of various stakeholders in today’s knowledge-driven economy.
Objectives
- The Online Short Term Course on Intellectual Property Rights: Contemporary Issues seeks to achieve the following objectives:
- Create awareness about the importance of intellectual property and its role in driving innovation, econonmic development, and business growth.
- Enhance participants’ understan ding of different forms of intellectual property, such as patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets.
- Equip participants with tools and strategies to protect, manage, and enforce intellectual property rights effectively.

b) Domain-Name Dispute and UDRP: Discuss the legal framework and dispute resolution mechanisms related to domain-name disputes, focusing on the Uniform Domain-Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP).
C) Significance of Patents in Driving Economic Development and Empowering Companies: Highlight the role of patents in fostering innovation, attracting investment, and driving economic growth for companies and nations.
d) Mediation in IPR Cases: Introduce participants to mediation as an alternative dispute resolution mechanism in intellectual property cases, emphasizing its benefits and practical application.
e) IPR Issues for Startups & MSMES and Best Practices & Strategies for Managing their Innovations: Address the specific challenges faced Startups and MSMEs in protecting and managing their intellectual property assets, and provide practical strategies and best practices.
f) IPRs and Al: Protection of AI Inventorship and Authorship and its Impact on Businesses: Examine the legal and ethical implications of AI-generated inventions and creations, including issues of Inventorship and authorship, and discuss their impact on businesses and IP rights.
g) Role and Importance of Licensing in Technology Transfer: Discuss the role of licensing agreements in facilitating technology transfer and fostering innovation ecosystems, covering topics such as licensing models, negotiation strategies, and commercialization of intellectual property.
h) Digital Piracy in the Social Media and Entertainment Industry: Analyze the challenges posed by digital piracy in the context of the social media and entertainment industry, exploring legal frameworks, enforcement mechanisms, and preventive strategies.
i) Intellectual Property Audits: Maximizing IP Assets: Provide insights into conducting intellectual property audits, assessing the value and potential of IP assets, and developing strateqies to maximize their commercial potential. j) Patent Drafting: Introduce participants to the fundamentals of patent drafting, including claim drafting, specification drafting, and patent
prosecution strategies.
