The University of Bologna Law Review is pleased to accept submissions for Volume 9 Issue 1 (2024).

All manuscripts complying with the editorial criteria and the cultural mission of the University of Bologna Law Review are welcome, as we strongly encourage an interdisciplinary approach.

Further information on the general topics and aims of the journal, as well as on the submission guidelines and the peer review process, are available on our website.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission’s compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  • Your submission has not been previously published. If you have already submitted your manuscript to another journal, please be sure to respect any contingent exclusivity condition
  • You claim to have read all the sections of the Authors Guidelines
  • You claim to have read the copyright notice published on the website

Author Guidelines

1. Manuscript submission

If you are willing to publish your submissions in the University of Bologna Law Review, you are required to:

Submissions which do not comply with the editorial and publication rules will be rejected by the Journal. 

2. Publication rules

§ 2.1. Types

Your submission must contain the following types of manuscripts:

  • Articles and Essays
  • Notes
  • Conference papers
§ 2.2. Format

The University of Bologna Law Review requests that you comply with the following standards of format and length of the submission:

  • Your submission must be written in correct English language. Manuscripts in other languages are rejected.
  • Your submission must be (in length, footnotes excluded):
    • Articles and Essays (min. 7,500 – max. 40,000 words)
    • Notes (min. 2,500 – max. 7,500 words)
    • Conference Papers (max. 10,000 words)
    All figures must be understood to include footnotes: Endnotes are not accepted. The Bibliography must be inserted into footnotes in accordance with the BlueBook citation standards.
  • The Journal may consider manuscripts exceeding the length of 40,000 words in case of outstanding pieces of scholarship.
  • You are requested to follow The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation (21st ed.)
  • Your submission must be in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or Open Document Text document file format. Other format (e.g. PDF) are not accepted.
§ 2.3. Metadata

Your submission must also contain:

  • The title
  • Keywords (maximum 5)
  • A short abstract of maximum 500 words (single spaced) in length, presenting original research in Legal Studies.
  • JEL Codes (maximum 3) for manuscripts where an Economic perspective related to Legal Studies is being emphasized.
  • A brief academic biography
  • A cover letter (optional)

Finally you should also provide datasets, with every empirical submissions, which will be not included in the text of the manuscript. They may be submitted via email, together with the manuscript and the disclaimer.
