ABOUT THE COURSE

Department of English offers an interdisciplinary course on Reading Feminist Theory; the course will introduce some of the essential ideas, concepts and debates marking the theoretical framework of Feminism. It will help to trace the evolution of the term ‘feminism’ as a worldview and read its journey across space and time. The students will engage with seminal works of Rosalind Delmar, Uma Narayan, Bell Hooks, Sandra Harding, Emily Martin, Charlotte Bunch, Shulaminth Firespace and many more to examine and explore the profound influence of theoretical perspective on identity, culture, meaning, race and ethnicity. To better comprehend the different threads of feminism in the contemporary world, where the discourse entails not only texts but also images, the present course will help the students to understand better the subject positions taken up under feminist theory. There is no doubt that Feminism stems from the ideals of justice, equality and freedom, and feminist debates challenge the traditional knowledge templates therefore the need to go back to the texts that are the foundation of thoretical framework.
